Early acts and laws of the state of Connecticut, 1784-95, printed with Connecticut's colonial charter and the Articles of Confederation. The present volume comprises the full recorded run of the acts and laws of the state of Connecticut from 1784 through May 1795. The first section (through page 265), issued with a separate titlepage, is the second edition of the text, printed by Timothy Green in New London, and may have been printed in 1785 or later, according to Evans. All but two of the remaining twenty-five parts were printed in New London at the press of Timothy Green, representing the full New London run of ACTS. as recorded by Evans and by Hazel A. Johnson's CHECKLIST OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, IMPRINTS 1709-1800. No New London printing for ACTS. for October 1785 is recorded; here, that part bears Thomas and Samuel Green's New Haven imprint (Evans 18967). The final part of the present volume, ACTS AND LAWS PASSED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY. for May 1795 (Evans 28467), was printed in Hartford by Elisha Babcock. The odd pagination in this final part is corrected in the present copy in contemporary manuscript, "465"-"477." This copy is from the collection of John Turner Wait (1811-99), a prominent attorney from New London county, who served as a Republican representative from Connecticut in Congress from 1876 to 1887. The front free endpaper bears the contemporary ink inscriptions: "Marvin Wait's Book Jan.y 1795. John T. Waits Book from his Father." Affixed to the front pastedown and the rear free endpaper and pastedown are over a dozen contemporary printed notices and newspaper clippings relating to John Turner Wait and his son and his father, both named Marvin. One clipping contains an elegy composed for the younger Marvin Wait who, at the age of nineteen, fought and died heroically at the Battle of Antietam. Several other clippings involve John T. Wait's elections to state offices, including party tickets for the November 1864 and May 1865 elections.
