FIRST EDITION Wear to top and bottom of spine, with a quarter-inch cloth strip across the very top of the spine, torn and partially detached. Gray boards, with brown design and gilt lettering to front board and spine. Hinges started, which means just beginning to separate. Spine lean. Over 120 illustrations throughout. Multi-colored foldout map of Indo-China tipped-in at rear, with one 2-3 inch tear right along the crease. 420 pp. The author proposed to journey through Indo-China, following a route through Sothern China (Kwang-tung, Kwang-si and Yunnan), the Shan or Laos country (lying between tonquin, Burmah, Yunnan and Siam), then to cross into Southeastern Burmah. Its length would exceed 1500 miles, some two-thirds of which would be "over untrodden ground, undescribed by European travellers" After making his plans, Colquhoun reports that his relatives and friends looked upon his project as "the veriest freak of madness." with "predictions of certain failure". Colquhoun set off from England on 8 December 1881 and reached Canton on the 19th of that same month. His main purose was essentially to do reconnaissance for potential extensions of trade routes, collect geographical information, etc. As to be expected, the deeply held if not every-day racism of the day prevailed. The author, frustrated in his attempts to secure a cook for the exploration either in China or in Hong-Kong, wrote: "It is said that a Chinaman will go anywhere for money, but our experience of Cantonese does not seem to prove this to be invariably the case.".
