It includes complete coverage of the Prophet's life, a detailed analysis of pre~Islamic Arabia, the situational context of revelation and a comparative study of the basics of Islamic and western civilizations. ~Dr Muhammad Husein Haykal is well known to the Arabic readers; his many books obviate the need for a lengthy introduction. Having studied in Egypt and in Paris, Haykal mastered the technique of historical research and scholarship. Although at first he was carried away by the tide of westernising, modernism, after two decades of involvement in Egypt's struggle for liberation from colonial Britain and a prodigious amount of literary output, Haykal's Islamic roots drew him back to Islamic studies. He devoted the rest of his career to the study of the life of the Prophet s . a.w. and his companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, Five masterpieces were the result: The Life of Muhammad, the Life of Abu Bakr; The life of 'Umar al~Faruk and The Home of Revolution. ~The late Prof. Isma'il Raji al~Faruqi (1921~1986) who translated this work, is widely recognised as an authority on Islam and comparative religion. A Palestinian by birth, Prof. Faruqi was the author of several books, among them: Al~Tawhid: Its Implications for Thought and Life, Trialogue of the Abrahamic Faiths, Christian Ethics, Historical Atlas of the Religions of the World, etc. His other monumental work, The Cultural Atlas of Islam, he co~authored with his wife Dr. Lois Lamya al~Faruqi. The Faruqis fell victim to an assassin's knife in the early hours of May 27, 1986,in their house in Philadelphia, U.S.A. (May Allah s.w.t. in His infinite mercy admit them in to His Januah).
