Descripción PHOTOVISON, Utrera (Seville), SPAIN, 1999. Illustrated Boards. Estado de conservación: Fine. First Edition Thus. 136pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in Spanish. Designed by Tuna Ciner and Joan Fontcuberta. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. A charming entry in the annals of late twentieth century cryptozoology, "Fauna" purports to undertake the photographic and classificatory coverage of several species of heretofore unknown animal life discovered chiefly in Africa and Asia during the expeditions of one "Dr. Peter Ameisenhaufen". While the presence of wry Catalan photographic fauxteur Joan Fontcuberta leaves the veracity of this intriguing volume subject to interpretation, all its participants, real or imagined, deserve an "A" for concept and execution. A brand new, pristine example of the hardbound 1999 PHOTOVISION Spanish language edition (whose 1988 predecessor is cited on pages 342-343 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", pages 262-64 of "The Book of 101 Books", page 40 of "From Fair to Fine 2" and page 140 of "From Fair to Fine 3"). Photography Monograph. Nº de ref. de la librería 019166

Descripción PhotoVision, Sevilla, Spain, 1999. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition thus (hardcover), first printing. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated paper-covered boards; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs and text (in Spanish) by Joan Fontcuberta and Pere Formiguera. Designed by Tuna Ciner and Joan Fontcuberta. 136 pp., with 99 black-and-white and 54 color illustrations. 9-1/8 x 6-7/8 inches. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004).]. Near Fine (moderate surface wear, sunning to the spine, light bumps to the corners). As David Levi Strauss writes in The Book of 101 Books, "The Catalan artist Joan Fontcuberta has been constructing elaborate historical fictions out of the excess credibility of photographs for some time, effectively (and often hilariously) calling the conventions of photographic believability into question in the process. Fauna is perhaps the most fully realized of these fictions . [This collaborative project] is presented as the recovered archive of a controversial German naturalist named Dr. Peter Ameisenhaufen (the name means 'anthill' in German, just as Formiguera means 'anthill' in Catalan), who travels around the world discovering new species of fantastic creatures and recording them with the help of his photographer Hans von Kubert (Joan Fontcuberta in German). In addition to evidential photographs of the weirdly appropriate hybrid animals, the archive also includes field notes (in German), maps, audio recordings, scientific papers, and other documents.".
