Catalonia is an autonomous community of Spain, located on the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. It is politically designated as a nationality by its Statute of Autonomy. Catalonia consists of four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. The capital and largest city is Barcelona, the second-largest city in Spain and the center of one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Catalonia was first settled during the Middle Palaeolithic. Like the rest of the Mediterranean side of the Iberian Peninsula, the area was occupied by the Iberians and several Greek and Carthaginian towns were established on the coast before the Roman conquest.
