My wife and I have done the Norwegian Coastal Voyage round trip (Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen) twelve times, and are booked for our thirteenth. We very much we'd had the benefit of this excellent book for our previous voyages, and are looking forward to taking it along next time. Quite frankly the voyage itself stands well on its own merits. What this book does is to add a number of extra dimensions, and is an invaluable aide to understanding more about the scenery, the history and the culture. If you read it before a voyage, it'll help you get the most out of the trip; if you read it after a voyage, it'll bring back beautiful memories. This book is a labour of love, and to those of us - and there are many from all over the world - for whom the Norwegian Coastal Voyage is a wonderful (and repeatable) experience, it is essential. If I were allowed only two books as a desert island castaway, Berit Liland's book would be one of them. --http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/8299720648/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
A brilliantly indepth look at the 11 day Norwegian trip on the Hurtergruten Coastal Steamers. To buy on the vessel is around £40 and this second hand book was around half the cost and in excellent condition. The book provides an almost minute by minute guide to what you are passing( and believe me there are thousands of islands) and the history etc of Norway. The vessel provides you with a small paperback version but this book really gets to grips with Norway. And Yes! I am going to keep it! --http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/8299720648/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
We are planning to make the voyage covered by the book in March 2011 so we haven't been able to use the book as a guide during our journey yet but, even so, it is proving invaluable for our planning both for the journey as a whole and for any excursions we want to make. The detail and content are superb and, although we won't read the book from cover to cover, it will serve as a great momento of the trip we have yet to make. All we need is the voyage to live up to our expectations. The book certainly does. --http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/8299720648/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
Reseña del editor:
This book is a detailed and modern presentation of the Norwegian «Hurtigruten» round trip sea voyage between the cities of Bergen and Kirkenes. The spectacular Norwegian coast abounds with beautiful nature, and is the home of thousands of years of culture, history and innumerable legends. Here you can read in real time about these and other themes as the ship cruises close by each location. Detailed maps of each stage of the voyage show your exact location along the coast. GPS-positions noted in the book will give you full use of your personal GPS, showing exactly which point you are passing at any time. However, if you do not have a GPS receiver, it is equally easy to locate your position on the landscape by using the indicated times as a reference. The aim of this book is to give you a whole new experience of the «World s Most Spectacular Coastal Voyage». Bring the book along for instant reference, and when you return home you ll have the perfect souvenir from the voyage. If you are a previous guest of the Hurtigruten ships, you can re-live your adventure through the text and many photos, and it may even awaken your desire to return to the coast. If you are planning your first trip along the Norwegian coast, this book provides a wealth of useful advance information. Richly illustrated, updated maps and photographs, and all factual information thoroughly revised prior to printing of this second edition (Spring 2012). This book is also available in Norwegian and in German language editions. Perfect for pre-voyage planning, and to stay ahead of your co-passengers in any knowledge quiz you may encounter upcoast. Navy and Air Force veterans will find several historical World War Two events of particular interest, as you are passing the areas of many daring raids along the coast. This book has sold over 20 000 copies (2012) since the first Norwegian edition in 2007. It is considered the ultimate guide book for the voyage, and is not comparable to general port descriptions or mostly illustrated works. The book is soft bound with a sturdy light weather resistant soft cover, in order for the book to stay open on tables and over a lap, sitting in a deck chair taking in the view.
