I am a Business Analyst, not a developer. My objective in reading this book was to improve my ability to provide good quality analysis documentation for development. Applying UML and Patterns is well regarded in the reviews at Amazon.com. Craig Larman helped me greatly in achieving my objective. His book clearly demonstrates how analysis artefacts become design and then code, and how these developments are related to Iterations within the Unified Process. His explanations are clear and thorough, and he repeats important points to help ensure understanding. I found this repetition particularly useful as my restricted reading time allowed me to study only short sections of the book at a time. I had previously read Scott Ambler's, The Object Primer, which is also very readable and comprehensive, but I benefited more from Applying UML and Patterns. Craig Larman's approach was just that bit more thorough. Craig Larman seems more like an impartial expert, I can almost hear him say, "These are my findings. I believe this will help you, but you decide". I will never rival Scott Ambler's knowledge, but he seems to me rather too much of a true-believer, "Trust me, a 5am cold bath and breakfast of raw egg will transform your world". --Moderately Intelligent Layman
Nice coverage to all the concepts and matter supported with good number of examples --Deepa Joshi
This third edition presents a well-defined roadmap so the reader can move along a step-by-step process from requirements gathering all the way to code generation. The author teaches the skill of OOAD using the latest version of the industry standard modeling language (UML 2.0). He also allows the reader to learn and apply the popular concept of design patterns and therefore helps readers accelerate their mastery of analysis and design. The author retains his thorough treatment of a single case study to help readers gain a big picture of successful software development. Once again this book delivers and furthers Craig Larman's name among software engineering luminaries.
