Text in English and German. Personal favourite projects selected by architects of international distinction are presented in a book for the first time. Projects that were devised and realised, but also some that were never built. Speakers in the 'Architecture Today' lecture series that has taken place for the last twenty years at Tübingen University were asked to contribute. Invitations went to 'established' master builders, provocative young developers of new forms and technologies or significant representatives of regional architecture: a promenade architectural ranges from coolly functional to free artistic design, from architecture that feels committed to the Bauhaus aesthetic to deconstructive design. The idea for this book came from the 20th anniversary of the lecture series. The result is an exciting catalogue of very different projects from the last three decades, like museums, buildings related to science and education and to music and theatre, offices and homes, government and religious buildings, right down to the architects' own houses. The scale ranges from mega-projects for whole cities in Asia to a subtle design for a lift in Salzburg or two thoughtful architectural visions expressed in a 'Tower of Dreams' or just in an exhibition. These are all projects that attach considerable significance to their inventors. A clear majority of the choice of architects lit upon realised projects originating in competitions, direct contracts or a problem the architects set themselves. The choice of projects that stayed on paper arouses even more curiosity -- buildings that did not win first prize in a competition, but still have a great deal to tell about the wealth of ideas, context and philosophy in contemporary architecture, presented in this publication because their designers definitely wanted to make their mark. A variety of answers were heard to the question of why a certain project was chosen. The fact is that ultimately favourite projects are the ones that represent philosophy and design ideals, as well a the knowledge and skill of the architects and teams in a particular way. But above all they were projects that moved the architects.

Acerca del autor
Ursula Schwitalla studied different subjects including art history, and works as an exhibition curator and art consultant. She was responsible for the 'Architecture Today' lecture series from the outset, as chair of the Tübingen Art-History Society and lecturer at Tübingen University's

Eingeladen waren 'etablierte' Baumeister, junge provozierende Entwickler neuer Formen und Techniken oder signifikante Vertreter regionaler Architektur: In einer promenade architecturale wurde der Facher aufgespannt von sachlich funktionaler bis freier kunstlerischer Gestaltung, von einer Architektur, die sich der Asthetik des Bauhauses verpflichtet fuhlt, bis hin zu dekonstruktivistischer Formfindung. Die Idee zu diesem Buch entstand aus Anlass des 20jahrigen Jubilaums der Vortragsreihe. Entstanden ist ein spannender Katalog ganz unterschiedlicher Projekte aus den letzten drei Jahrzehnten, wie Museen, Bauten fur Wissenschaft und Bildung sowie fur Musik und Theater, Buro- und Wohnbauten, Regierungs- und Sakralbauten bis hin zu den eigenen Hausern der Architekten. Das Spektrum reicht von den Mega- Projekten fur ganze Stadte in Asien bis zu dem subtilen Entwurf fur einen Lift in Salzburg oder zwei gedankenvollen Architektenvisionen, die ihren Ausdruck in einem 'Turm der Traume' oder nur in einer Ausstellung fanden. Es sind alles Projekte, denen ihre Erfinder eine besondere Bedeutung beimessen. Mit deutlicher Mehrheit fiel die Auswahl der Architekten auf verwirklichte Projekte, hervorgegangen aus Wettbewerben, Direktauftragen oder einer selbst gestellten Aufgabe. Noch neugieriger macht jedoch die Auswahl der Projekte, die auf dem Papier blieben - Bauten, die keinen ersten Preis in einem Wettbewerb erhielten, aber dennoch so viel uber Ideenreichtum, Kontext und Philosophie in der heutigen Architektur erzahlen und mit deren Prasentation in dieser Publikation ihre Entwerfer ganz bewusst ein Zeichen setzen wollten. Auf die Frage, warum ein bestimmtes Projekt ausgewahlt wurde, erhalt man die unterschiedlichsten Antworten. Lieblingsprojekte sind aber diejenigen, die Philosophie und Entwurfsideale sowie Wissen und Konnen der Architekten und ihrer Teams in idealer Weise reprasentieren. Vor allem aber sind es Projekte, die die Architekten bewegt haben. Ursula Schwitalla studierte u. a. Kunstgeschichte und arbeitet als Ausstellungskuratorin und Kunstberaterin. Als Vorsitzende der Tubinger Kunstgeschichtlichen Gesellschaft und Lehrbeauftragte am Kunsthistorischen Institut der Universitat Tubingen war sie von Anfang an verantwortlich fur die Vortragsreihe 'Architektur Heute'.
