Fifty years of existence is a relatively short period for the development of wheelchair basketball as a sport. However, taking into consideration the life expectation of a person with a spinal cord injury in the late 40s, the growth of wheelchair basketball reflects one of the greatest achievements in mankind. The author has been involved in the wheelchair sport movement 27 years now . Through his first contact with wheelchair basketball players in Germany, he experienced a sensation of great surprise. It was difficult for the author at that time to equate a person affected by such severe physical disability with one able to play and enjoy sports. He was inspired and at that time fascinated to find out more. This book recounts major struggles to get the sport off the ground. It also records major achievements and great players who epitomise every aspect of the Olympic ideal.
