Dante según Blake: ilustraciones espectaculares de la "Divina Comedia"

Obra maestra de la literatura universal terminada en 1321, la "Divina Comedia" de Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) está considerada la obra escrita en italiano más importante. El texto describe los viajes de Dante por el Infierno, el Purgatorio y el Paraíso, pero a un nivel más profundo narra el viaje que realiza el alma hasta llegar a Dios.

En los últimos años de su vida, el poeta y artista romántico William Blake (1757–1827) realizó 102 ilustraciones para la obra maestra de Dante, desde bocetos a lápiz hasta acuarelas. Al igual que el extenso poema de Dante, las ilustraciones de Blake narran desde los suplicios del Infierno hasta la felicidad del Paraíso, desde las crueles amputaciones de los condenados hasta la belleza divina de los redimidos. Aunque fiel al texto, Blake también aportó su propio punto de vista sobre algunos de los temas centrales de Dante.

Las ilustraciones de Blake, que en el momento de su muerte se hallaban en diferentes fases de ejecución, se encuentran hoy en siete instituciones distintas. Esta edición de Taschen reúne de nuevo todas estas imágenes acompañadas de fragmentos de la obra maestra de Dante.
