Sigmar Polke (born 1941) has been experimenting for more than 40 years with different styles and subject matter as well as with a variety of materials and techniques. His creative diversity is demonstrated powerfully in the new group of works presented in this book, the so-called lenticular pictures , or lens paintings. Polke applies a layer of structure gel, usually used to thicken acrylic paint, to a previously painted picture and then slides a saw-toothed scraper over the surface, to which he later adds more paint. The resulting works have an unexpected three-dimensional quality, providing the viewer with different images according to the angle from which the painting is viewed. Photographs showing the paintings in progress all specially selected for the book by Polke reveal the artist s idiosyncratic use of surface, his application of colour and his subtly humorous way of combining abstraction and realism.

Anlässlich der Verleihung des Rubens-Preises der Stadt Siegen 2007 wurde dort eine Ausstellung mit den sogenannten "Linsenbildern" inszeniert. Mit den Linsenbildern zieht er nach den Rastern und transparenten Bildträgern eine weitere optische Schicht oder Wahrnehmungsfläche in die Malerei ein. Die gewellte Oberfläche des Linsenrasters fungiert als eine Sichtfläche, die das darunterliegende Bild verzerrt, weil die gewellte Oberfläche das Licht in unterschiedliche Richtungen bricht. Das technisch hergestellte Linsenraster, wie man es aus Wackelbildern kennt, hat einen verblüffenden 3D-Effekt. Polke ahmt die Hyperillusion des technischen Bildes nicht nach, sondern er rechnet mit der Ungenauigkeit und Fehlerhaftigkeit "seines" Linsenrasters und der spezifischen ästhetischen Qualität. Dieses Buch ist den Linsenbildern gewidmet. Die Besonderheit liegt darin, dass der Künstler am Layout und der Bildfolge mitgearbeitet hat und Zustandsaufnahmen wichtiger Gemälde veröffentlicht. Gerade in diesem prozessualen Blick auf die Werke wird deutlich, welche Ebenen bei der Betrachtung für den Künstler wichtig sind. Die Texte von Siegfried Gohr, Charles W. Haxthausen und Eva Schmidt sind Erstveröffentlichungen.
