9783820495829: The Apocalypse Commentary of Tyconius: A History of Its Reception and Influence (Europäische Hochschulschriften / European University Studies / Publications Universitaires Européennes)

The present study investigates the lost Apocalypse Commentary of Tyconius. Two manuscript fragments are extant while nine authors from the fourth to the eighth centuries directly cite the lost commentary in some cases extensively. Four conclusions follow the detailed study of the manuscripts and works influenced by Tyconius. First, the interdependence of the nine works influenced by Tyconius is demonstrated. Second, the manuscript tradition is reconstructed as far as possible. Third, the structure of the lost commentary is discussed. Fourth, a complete synopsis of the manuscripts and the passages quoted from the lost Apocalypse Commentary is presented.

Review:

«Steinhauser has produced a work of textreconstruction which is significant in its results, yet modest in its claims and impeccable in its careful and precise methodology.» (Peter J.Gorday, Patristics)
«C'est certes un travail utile et important qu'a fait ici K.S. On doit admirer le soin minutieux qu'il a mis à examiner l'une après l'autre les pièces du puzzle, à les comparer entre elles, à les assembler en un tout bien agencé qui ouvre des perspectives à de nouvelles investigations.» (Revue Bénédictine)
«This work of impressive scholarship clears the ground for a final reconstruction of the important lost commentary of Tyconius, in as far as it is quoted and reworded in the tradition dependent on him. The author is to be thanked for his consequent methodical approach, which makes it easy to follow him in his treatment of an extremely complicated question.» (Martin Parmentier, Tijdschrfit voor filosofie en theologie)
«This excellent example of research methodology is the published form of the author's doctoral thesis, completed under the direction of K.S. Frank in 1986 at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. ... The research this book represents is massive and I would not presume to subject it to negative criticism.» (J. Kevin Coyle, Faculty of Theology, Saint Paul University, Eglise et Théologie)
