Many works by British artists from the Fifties and Sixties, such as Richard Hamilton and David Hockney, seem no less 'pop' and 'American' than works by Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein. Pop artists on both sides of the Atlantic have borrowed from American popular culture, using the same gaudy formulas and techniques taken from advertising. This book traces the development of pop art in the Fifties and Sixties to the dialogue between British and American artists, documenting its complex genesis in London and later in New York and Los Angeles, and concentrating on the development of its 'pure' characteristics such as sharply outlined images and the use of photographic media. The book not only investigates the connections between American and British artists, but also takes a closer look at the exchange between the East and West Coast of the United States.

Pop Art: US/UK Connections 1956-1966 examines the critical transatlantic cultural exchange that led to the decade-long development of classic Pop Art. This publication explores the impact on British and American artists of post-World War II American popular culture as disseminated in the mass media of film, recorded music, advertising and television. While Pop Art drew its influences from many sources, include abstract and figurative modes in painting and advertising, assemblage, and early happenings, it is these mass cultural influences that are the most crucial. The main emphasis of the book is on the resultant ''pure'' aspects of Pop--its hard-edged imagery and its use of photographic media and reproduction processes. Pop Art: US/UK Connections 1956-1966 is the first major American publication focusing on how a dialogue between British and American artists provided the genesis of Pop Art. Many readers will be surprised by this full account of the complex history of Pop Art, which involved a series of successive developments, first in London and subsequently in New York and Los Angeles. Featuring extensive documentation of works from all of Pop Art's major figures--British and American, famous and less well-known--Pop Art: US/UK Connections 1956-1966 also presents essential essays and interviews devoted to all things Pop.

This definition of Pop rests on the adoption of preexisting or received images from mass media sources of advertising, television, and movies - images that convey the personalities, common objects, and scenery of vernacular culture. The techniques utilized, however, varied: the Americans generally used a more reductive method, arriving at a centralized iconic image, while the British preferred an episodic approach that generated an implied narrative. As the essays in this book make clear, Pop Art promoted no specific agenda beyond the investigation of the prevailing American environment." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: London Pop Recollected, by Christopher Finch; New Painting of Common Objects, by Walter Hopps interviewed by Jim Edwards; British Pop Art: 1956-1966: A Documentary Essay, by David E.
