This volume contains the contributions to a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Cetraro, Italy. The conference focused on three topics that are considered of particular interest to researchers in the fields of speech recognition and understanding: advances in hidden Markov modelling, connectionist approaches to speech and language modelling, and linguistic processing including language and dialogue modelling. The volume is divided into six sections, covering hidden Markov models, continuous speech recognition systems, connectionist models of speech, stochastic models for language and dialogue, understanding and dialogue systems, and acoustic-phonetic coding and segmentation.
