9783319339931: Networks and New Services: A Complete Story (Internet of Things)

This book shines a spotlight on software-centric networks and their emerging service environments. The authors examine the road ahead for connectivity, for both humans and 'things', considering the rapid changes that have shaken the industry.

The book analyses major catalytic shifts that are shaping the communications world: softwarization, virtualization, and cloud computing. It guides the reader through a maze of possible architectural choices, driven by discriminating and sometimes conflicting business considerations. The new ICT capabilities lead us toward smarter environments and to an ecosystem where applications are backed up by shared networking facilities, instead of networks that support their own applications. Growing user awareness is a key driver towards the softwarization process.

Softwarization disrupts the current status quo for equipment, development, networks, operations and business. It changes radically the value chain and the involved stakeholders. The dilemma is between a 'slow burn' traditional step-by-step approach and a bold transformation of the whole infrastructure and business models. This book is essential reading for those seeking to build user-centric communication networks that support independent agile and smart applications.

“The book gives an insightful account of modern telecom networks, pinpointing the radical transformations of the last 20 years. This is the perfect read for those who are interested in the grand challenges of networks and in the socio-economic reasons why the telecom industry to embrace the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems.”

Prof. Antonio Liotta, Eindhoven University of Technology

“This book fulfills an urgent need to thoroughly analyze the entanglement of network and software architectures by taking into account the increasing softwarization. It highlights important issues behind today’s business models and opens the road for sustainable future approaches to provide user appreciated valuable services.”

Dr. Eng. Hendrik Berndt, former CTO of NTT DOCOMO Communications Laboratories Europe

More recently his contribution is in the area of new architectures for the service provision with particular attention to data centric and user centric solutions. Under this perspective he is currently involved in Telecom Italia activities related to Big Data, architecture for IoT, and ICT technologies for leveraging Cultural Heritage.

Review:

“The book gives an insightful account of modern telecommunication networks, pinpointing the radical transformations of the last 20 years. The reader is conducted through the complex world of communications, starting from the 1990s telephony which was followed by a rapid sequence of unprecedented overhauls. The intelligent network, packet-switching, all-IP convergence, the IP multimedia sub-system are just few of the milestones that have lead to the ubiquitous communications of today. The authors manage to introduce these specialist topics in an accessible way, unveiling an intricate story in which technology evolves alongside business strategies but is ultimately driven by the human quest for enhanced connectivity. This is the perfect read for those who are interested in the grand challenges of networks and wish to appreciate the socio-economic reasons that have lead the telecom industry to embrace the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems.” (Prof. Antonio Liotta, Author of “Networks for Pervasive Services: Six Ways to Upgrade the Internet”, Springer (2011))

Descripción Springer International Publishing AG. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: New. 225 pages. This book shines a beam of light towards tomorrows network architectures and their emerging service environments, while considering the transformation that has already taken place. From the perspective of the rapid changes that have already shaken the industry, the authors examine the road ahead for communications: - is it a consolidation of technologies or a structural transformation One thing is clear - the future communication environment will be fundamentally different from what we experience today. The book presents an analysis of the major catalytic shifts that are shaping the telecommunications world: Software-Defined Networking, Virtualization, and Cloud Computing. These technologies can be deployed in traditional ways, and transform services via a slow burn approach, or can be constructed as bolder designs of advanced infrastructures that revolutionize the whole landscape and its value chains. When searching for the appropriate strategic path, this book can guide the reader through the maze of possible architectural choices, driven by discriminating, and sometimes conflicting business considerations. The book shows how these different technologies can be integrated, and how such integration can enable new services, and probably new business opportunities. Software assumes a definitive role in the vision of the future network, in every industry, including communications. In particular, the integration of new ICT capabilities will continue to shape the evolution of communication systems towards a new smarter environment that will enrich human communication. This process of softwarization disrupts the current status quo at equipment development, network installation, network management, operations and business levels. The effects change who the stakeholders are, how they interact and what roles they play. Hence, it is important to understand the impact of steps towards softwarization and turn the effects into advantages. p In future, ICT ecosystem could latch on to new technologies that enable an entirely new paradigm, e. g. smart environments where the application domains are backed up by shared networking, not individual networks that also support some applications. Characterized by its unique user-centric approach, this book presents a view of evolution driven by the need to satisfy the human requirements, whether in person-to-person or in machine interactions. Growing user power is becoming a key motivator in reforming the communication paradigm and in accelerating the softwarization process. This item ships from multiple locations.
