9781903706305: Porsche 928

The 928 was originally designed as a replacement for the legendary 911, although traditionalists wouldn’t let the air-cooled machine die, and the fuel crisis that occurred soon after the new Grand Tourer was launched meant its stunning performance on the road would not be matched in the showrooms. There was hardly a bad word written about the 928 or the beautifully-engineered V8 that powered it when it was new, yet it always seemed to be in the shadow of its older, six-cylinder stablemate. Today, over a decade since the last car was built, interest in this magnificent Porsche is increasing, as people start to judge it in a different light. This painstakingly-researched book looks at the birth of the 928, and then follows its progress around the world, taking in all the variants in all major markets, as well as a peak at its racing exploits. Illustrated with contemporary material throughout, it is the perfect guide to this eight-cylinder Porsche.

About the Author:

Born in Coventry, once the heart of the British motor industry, Brian Long has a passion for vintage and sporting machinery. A trained mechanical engineer and a long-term owner of both the MX-5 and rotary Mazdas, he has had a strong connection with Mazda products for well over a decade. Brian now lives just outside Tokyo, and spends much of his free time with Thoroughbred horses. He has had more than 70 books published, including many works on Japanese marques.

Review:

"... this is a solid history with lots of great archive pics, including factory development shots." – Octane

"a densely packed, authoritative and well-researched history of details ... should give any prospective Porsche 928 buyer the confidence to choose, verify and purchase without worrying that colours or features don't add up." - Classic Car Weekly

"[A] workmanlike and detailed account ... very much the compendium for 928 owners and enthusiasts" - Kieron Fennelly

"Each generation gets its own chapter, with step-by-step detail on how the model evolved and period quote from drivers such as Phil Hill, plus explanations of the 928's engineering. A thorough account of an underrated car." – Classic & Sports Car

"Long has included much contemporary literature from the 928 years and the color photography shows the car off to great effect ... a comprehensive view of this hugely sporting GT." – Classic Cars

"BOOK OF THE MONTH. A worthwhile publication that Porsche enthusiasts will want to add to their library shelves." – Australian Classic Car
