From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- These biographies focus on the subjects' accomplishments in the field of civil rights. Celsi concentrates on the Montgomery bus boycott in Rosa Parks, but also gives information about the rest of Parks's life, which has been devoted largely to work in civil rights. She includes useful and informative sections on the Ku Klux Klan, segregated schools, the Freedom Train, and the meaning of the word "boycott" itself. It is more up-to-date than Louise Meriwhether's Don't Ride the Bus on Mondays (Prentice-Hall, 1973, o.p.), which covers Parks's life only through the boycott and is illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings. Hakim's Martin Luther King, Jr ., although providing little information that cannot be found elsewhere, is an attractive, brief biography. Shorto begins with Lincoln's first personal experience of a slave auction, briefly describes his early political career and family, and discusses his years as president. There is also an explanation of the causes of the Civil War and the positions of both sides. Jackie Robinson concentrates on the man's position as the first black player in professional baseball, describes the Negro National League, and explains Branch Rickey's contributions to both civil rights and baseball. Each book is illustrated with clear, well-chosen photographs. All four are free from fictionalization. While excellent for reports, they should attract some recreational readers as well. --Jean H.
