'Long Pig; A white man to be eaten' Here where the living eat the dead, the dead may eat the living too. Their spirits are all around us now, carved in the rock, in the shells, in the trunk of the Pandanu tree - Deep in the Polynesian islands of the Pacific Ocean, hungry spirits circle the homes of writer Robert Louis Stevenson and artist Paul Gauguin. The path to Stevenson's grave, his 'Road to Paradise', is complete; he can pass on anytime he likes. But, having spent thirty years in rigorous combat with the grim reaper, is he finally ready to concede defeat? His islander maid, Java is terrified his spirit will get waylaid on its journey back to Edinburgh and stay to devour her soul. Gauguin too, is ready - he has bought rum, arsenic and morphine for his suicide cocktail and is certain he's not long for this world. It seemed easy enough to avoid being arrested by the gendarme, but he'll be damned if they give him a Catholic burial in consecrated ground. "Death of Long Pig", a reference to the native South Sea Islanders' term for a white man to be eaten, premieres at the Finborough Theatre, London, on 7 July 2009.
NIGEL PLANER is most famous as the drippy hippie, Neil, in The Young Ones and as one of the original members of The Comic Strip. As an actor he has played leads in many West End musicals such as Chicago, We Will Rock You and Wicked and has just taken over the role of Michael Ball's husband in Hairspray. As Nicholas Craig, he wrote the spoof autobiography, I, an Actor - Another Great Actor Explores Himself. His previous play, On the Ceiling transferred from Birmingham to the West End and was published by NHB.

Two great artists - Robert Louis Stevenson and Paul Gauguin - confront their own mortality in the strange and supernatural Polynesian islands they made their home.'Long pig: A white man to be eaten'Deep in the Polynesian islands of the Pacific Ocean, hungry spirits circle the homes of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and artist Paul Gaugin, who lived and died on the islands only a few years apart.Stevenson has spent thirty years in rigorous combat with the Grim Reaper, but is he finally ready to concede defeat? Gauguin has bought rum, arsenic and morphine for his suicide cocktail and is certain he's not long for this world, but he'll be damned if they give him a Catholic burial in consecrated ground. As their final hours approach, they face the eternal question: is it how we prepare for death that really governs the way we live?Nigel Planer's play Death of Long Pig was first staged at the Finborough Theatre, London, in 2009.'A meditation on cultural identity. I left the theatre impressed by Planers curiosity and intelligence' The Times'No boring history lesson, but an opportunity to observe the artist, facing death, battle-scarred by the compulsion to create against reason' British Theatre Guide Based on the curious fact that the Scottish Presbyterian Robert Louis Stevenson and the hedonistic Paul Gauguin both ended their days on the South Sea Islands within a few years of each other.
