9781848310353: Quantum

“One of the best guides yet to the central conundrums of modern physics.”―John Banville

Quantum theory is weird. As Niels Bohr said, if you weren’t shocked by quantum theory, you didn’t really understand it. For most people, quantum theory is synonymous with mysterious, impenetrable science. And in fact for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly written account of this fundamental scientific revolution, focusing on the central conflict between Einstein and Bohr over the nature of reality and the soul of science. This revelatory book takes a close look at the golden age of physics, the brilliant young minds at its core―and how an idea ignited the greatest intellectual debate of the twentieth century. 16 pages of photographs

About the Author:

Manjit Kumar has degrees in physics and philosophy and has written for Slate, The Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement, The Independent, and New Scientist. He lives in London.

From AudioFile:

Perhaps not to the casual listener's taste, Kumar's history of the development of quantum theory and the weight of work that has been undertaken to explain these difficult phenomena is a wonderful experience for lovers of physics. In this audiobook, complicated scientific theorems and, at times, almost mind-bendingly complex discussions regarding elements, atomic weights, experiments, and chains of formulae are easily dealt with by Ray Porter, who demonstrates a relaxed familiarity with technical matter. Porter re-creates the lives and times of the great scientists Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Marie Curie, and Ernest Rutherford, among others, who played their parts in the advancement of this dynamic new physics. QUANTUM offers almost 15 hours of solid science for devotees of the subatomic world. B.D.J. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

Descripción Icon. 1 Paperback(s), 2009. soft. Estado de conservación: New. (Shortlisted for the 2009 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction) This book from philosopher and physicist Manjit Kumar offers an illuminating and dramatic history of quantum theory, which when introduced ignited the greatest intellectual debate of the 20th century. Also the editor of Prometheus and co-author of Science and the Retreat from Reason, Kumar here focuses on the conflict between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr over the nature of reality and the soul of science."Kumar, who is trained as both a philosopher and a physicist, is eminently qualified to bring off this ambitious attempt to bring the story of the discovery of quantum physics to life for the layperson. He mixes up biography, narrative history and lucid explanation of the science involved to create a highly readable account of one of the most important but impenetrable topics of 20th-century thinking."—26.org.uk 448. Descripción Icon, 2014. Estado de conservación: New. The name of Albert Einstein is a byword for scientific genius, yet Heisenberg maintained that Niels Bohr - who feared the 'end of physics' if Einstein's ideas proved correct - had a greater influence. The decades-long conversation between these two sparring partners forms the framework of Kumar's history of the quantum revolution, in which he sets clear explanations of the often mind-boggling science within a vivid narrative illustrating how scientific rivalry gave birth to atomic physics. Descripción Icon Books Ltd, United Kingdom, 2010. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. This is about gob-smacking science at the far end of reason . Take it nice and easy and savour the experience of your mind being blown without recourse to hallucinogens Nicholas Lezard, Guardian For most people, quantum theory is a byword for mysterious, impenetrable science. And yet for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this magisterial book, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly-written history of this fundamental scientific revolution, and the divisive debate at its core. Quantum theory looks at the very building blocks of our world, the particles and processes without which it could not exist. Yet for 60 years most physicists believed that quantum theory denied the very existence of reality itself. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar shows how the golden age of physics ignited the greatest intellectual debate of the twentieth century. Quantum theory is weird. In 1905, Albert Einstein suggested that light was a particle, not a wave, defying a century of experiments. Werner Heisenberg s uncertainty principle and Erwin Schrodinger s famous dead-and-alive cat are similarly strange. As Niels Bohr said, if you weren t shocked by quantum theory, you didn t really understand it. While Quantum sets the science in the context of the great upheavals of the modern age, Kumar s centrepiece is the conflict between Einstein and Bohr over the nature of reality and the soul of science. Bohr brainwashed a whole generation of physicists into believing that the problem had been solved , lamented the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann. But in Quantum , Kumar brings Einstein back to the centre of the quantum debate. Quantum is the essential read for anyone fascinated by this complex and thrilling story and by the band of brilliant men at its heart. Nº de ref. de la librería AA99781848310353
