At the beginning of the railway age, Hampshire lines were based on three simple main routes. They were Southampton to London, Southampton to the Midlands and the North, and Portsmouth to South Wales. From these three lines, branches were developed to reach other areas of the country. Early on, it became clear that Hampshire railways would play a significant part in the life of the country as a whole. The Royal Train was soon a regular sight as it took Queen Victoria and her family to Gosport. Later the county's lines became vital in two world wars carrying troops to the ports and ambulance trains full of the wounded to hospitals in the Midlands and beyond. But at no time were the local railways more important than in the build up of men and equipment prior to the D-Day landings.
