Based on the author's own childhood in war-torn Austria, this is the story of Christel Goth, whose family move to villa outside Vienna when their appartment is bombed. Her wounded father deserts from the army to be with them, but must then stay hidden from the Russian soldiers who occupy the villa.
Christine Nostlinger is one of the most popular writers in Europe today and her books have been translated into many languages. A number of her books have been turned into films in Germany. In 1984 she won the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Medal. She is married and has two daughters.
