9781782210283: Pattern Cutting for Kids' Clothing

Packed with useful advice and practical instruction, Pattern Cutting for Kids' Clothes is the ultimate resource for anyone looking to design, adapt, or customize sewing patterns for kids' clothes. Cutting through and clarifying sewing jargon with its highly accessible instructions, the book addresses a wide range of considerations specific to children's clothing, taking into account key priorities such as comfort, functionality, durability, ease of care, and incorporating extra room for growth. Illustrated step-by-step instructions talk readers through a number of handy techniques for adding child-friendly elements to patterns, covering everything from easy fastenings to pockets, patches, elastic waistbands, linings, and everything else in between. Uniquely, the book also includes QR codes (readable from any Smartphone) that link directly to downloadable pattern templates, which readers can then customize however they wish. In contrast to the vast majority of project-based books on the subject, Pattern Cutting for Kids' Clothes places the emphasis on the practical techniques themselves, equipping readers with the necessary skills and know-how to apply these to their own projects. Rather than being restricted to a limited number of clothing designs, readers are shown how to draw up their own patterns from scratch, enabling them to create a whole closet's worth of skirts, dresses, pants, shirts, and more; also included are a wealth of creative costume ideas for dressing up and parties. Pattern Cutting for Kids' Clothes also stands out from the crowd with its chapter on 'Taking it Further', which provides valuable advice for sewers on how to market and sell their own patterns, with inside hints and tips from contemporary practitioners.

Review:

November 2014 This title is packed with practical advice for the home sewer who has mastered most sewing patterns and is ready to branch out and make their own. The book includes 12 patterns as well as a basic block to be modified as you wish using the tips and advice provided. These patterns need to be downloaded and printed and step-by-step instructions aren't provided - this book is aimed at the experienced sewer. Measuring techniques, finishes and fasteners and considerations for what children require in their clothing are all clearly explained before the book moves onto techniques for using and modifying basic blocks and altering existing patterns or making patterns from clothing. There are sections for a range of garments including tops, dresses, playsuits, waistcoats and trousers each of which includes details for possible modifications to the pattern as well as a chapter explaining how to take your pattern design one step further and produce and sell your own designs! June 14 This book aims to help people design sewing patterns for children's clothes, or to customise or alter kids patterns. The book starts with a guide to taking accurate measurements and to the basic blocks you'll need to use (which you can download and print - no scaling needed) and how to alter the blocks should you need to. It then covers several different garments to make, split by garment type. It explains how to use the blocks to draft the pattern and how to customise the garment by adding things like sleeves, pockets, collars etc so you can make a unique garment. It has colour step by step diagrams, written instructions plus a photos of the finished garment. If you want to get more creative in making clothes for children, rather than just following set projects, then this is the book for you. Sewing Directory, The Feb 14 Ever wanted to make your own children's clothes? This book is a great resource for designing, adapting and customising sewing patterns. Whether you want to make clothes from scratch or simply alter a pattern, this book is your ideal companion. There are even ideas for marketing and selling your own patterns although this section is limited to things you'll already have thought of if you are going down that route. A good variety of clothing items are included. There are downloadable templates (you need a smartphone or webcam) plus lots of advice at every stage. Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts
