Written and published anonymously in 1729, A Modest Proposal, by Jonathan Swift, is a satirical essay about poverty in Ireland during the 18th century.

In the essay Swift suggests that the poor should sell their children as food to the rich, to ease the economic turmoil in Ireland. Swift wittingly illustrates his frustration at the incompetence of Ireland’s politicians, the oppression of the English, and the poor living conditions of the Irish people. As one of the most famous satirical works in the English language, A Modest Proposal, is a classic that would be a great addition to any readers’ collection.
