9781631407987: Flight of the Raven

Winner of the Best Artist Award at the Angoulême Festival! Lushly illustrated and one of the most stunningly beautiful graphic novels of the 21st century.

The story takes place in Paris during the German Occupation and stars a memorable heroine in the French Resistance fighter named Jeanne. With the help of an apolitical cat burglar named François, she tries to save her comrades, including her missing sister Cécile, from the Gestapo. They walk in the places between shadows, as Gibrat uses the evocative Paris rooftops and river barges on the Seine almost as separate characters. The book also includes a portfolio of pin-ups featuring its heroine.

About the Author:

Jean-Pierre Gibrat was born in Paris in 1954, less than a decade after the Second World War. "In my generation," he says, "everyone was at least once asked the question: 'What would you have done if you had lived at that time?'" It was with the award-winning The Reprieve, to which Flight of the Raven is a sequel, that Jean-Pierre Gibrat began writing his own scenarios, seamlessly uniting words and pictures.

Review:

"Gibrat’s artwork is mostly a joy to behold..... This classicism of the story that allows it to build and breathe also brings its characters alive, and the lush lens suddenly creates unexpected magic in the process.... I expect to revisit it in a decade or so and find it getting better with age.” —JT Lindroos, bookgasm
“One of the most memorable graphic novels of the past decade.... “ —Christian Science Monitor

“One of the most memorable graphic novels of the past decade.... Each page is lushly illustrated in gorgeous watercolors. From the rooftops and the streets of Paris to the natural beauty along the Seine to every café interior, and life on and inside a barge, Gibrat's art makes you feel like you're looking in a window to the living past.... This is a wonderful book for graphic novel fans but also for history buffs and art lovers.”
—Rich Clabaugh, The Christian Science Monitor
