9781606131701: A Room of Golden Shells: 100 Works by Artists and Writers with Down Syndrome

Check out this fabulous book featuring the creativity of people with Down syndrome!

On entering a room of golden shells, you might first notice how alike the shells are--their sameness of color, for instance--but soon you see the myriad variations in shape, texture, and size. Similarly, the artists represented in this volume share a common attribute--Down syndrome--yet their works of visual art and creative writing are as distinct as the individuals who made them.

Created by artists ages 14 to early 50s from the United States and Canada, the 100 works were solicited via a contest and judged by Woodbine House staff. This dynamic collection of painting, ceramics, poetry, and prose marks one of the rare occasions that the creative talents of teenagers and adults with Down syndrome have been showcased outside their own community.

Inspired by nature, popular culture, travel, master artists, faith, and dreams, these pieces dazzle us with mastery of craft, captivate us with a novel metaphor (such as the golden shells in 14-year-old Fiona Morris's poem), and tell us how it feels to live with a disability.

Review:

The book is defiant and celebratory; each piece responds to society's limited understanding of the artists' abilities and gifts, demanding a reexamination of artists with Down syndrome. Adrian Drower answers what Langston Hughes asked in 1926 ('What happens to a dream deferred?') with his moving poem No Longer Deferred. 'A withered flower can grow back / more beautiful than ever / dreams like pine trees last forever,' Drower writes. The message is simple: nurturing the gifts of artists and writers with Down syndrome is an important endeavor. Their work is compelling, their experiences fascinating, and their voices deserve to be heard. --Newsline (Federation for Children with Special Needs)

What an inspirational collection of work by individuals with Down syndrome who express themselves through visual art and creative writing! More than 100 works are presented by artists from North America ranging in age from 14 to 51--all with Down syndrome. This collection will inspire you, make you laugh, and give you hope. --Down Syndrome News, Vol. 36, Summer 2013 (Newsletter of the National Down Syndrome Congress)
