"Here the unimaginative shackles of orthodox psychiatric history taking and mental state examination are thrown off with the proposal that the diagnostic process starts from the initial contact with the patient. This of course, is obvious to the experienced practitioner but is rarely conveyed in textbooks on psychiatric interviewing, which tend to convey a systematic, rather pedestrian approach, where mental state examination and diagnosis linearly follow data collection.
