9781576874561: Cypher

Acclaimed rock photographer Charles Peterson is back with a new subject—the world of contemporary breakdancing. B-boying, as it’s referred to by its adepts, centers around the “cypher” (circle) created when b-boys and b-girls gather to practice or to “battle.” Bigger and badder than ever, breakdancing has grown since its beginnings in the 1970s to become a global youth phenomenon today. Yet it remains a highly individualized practice—all one needs to get down are some beats and a smooth floor (and, of course, scads of strength, style, and brio).

With Cypher, Peterson takes a fresh look at this phenomenon with his own brand of fine-art documentation: part Larry Fink, part Barbara Morgan, with a heaping dose of the spirit that defined his previous powerHouse monograph, Touch Me I’m Sick. He focuses not only on some of the most radical performances by today’s most talented breakers, but also on the fans, the sidelines, and the camaraderie of the crews in order to put you inside the world of the b-boy.

Taken primarily with cumbersome medium-format cameras, the photographs have the depth and resolution normally associated with high-end fashion and portrait photography— even when the subjects are caught spontaneously in mid-air! Despite the awkwardness of the method, the photos still have all the buzz and excitement found in Peterson’s iconic images of the grunge movement, with an added twist of unexpected elegance.

Cypher was shot over a period of six years, primarily in Peterson’s hometown of Seattle, as well as at major events over the last few years in Los Angeles, New York City, and Portland, Oregon.

From the Author:

First off, I'm not a b-boy. Not even close. I've always loved to dance, often with camera in hand, but the last time I attempted a breakdance move my back was screwed for a month. No, I'm a photographer. And what photographers do is find a subject that fascinates them and then shoot the crap out of it until they make it their own. As outsiders we sometimes see things (moments, angles, details) that aren't necessarily obvious or even important to the subjects involved. Shedding light--literally. My biggest goal is that my photographs have a universal appeal and not just preach to a niche choir. I accomplished that with grunge and so set out to do the same with this extraordinary world of breaking.

I'd heard tale of contemporary b-boys in Seattle, but it wasn't until early 2002 that I took the plunge and ventured out on a Monday night (for some reason the ongoing and ubiquitous Seattle club night for b-boying has always been Mondays) to the now-defunct Nation. I was blown away by what I encountered. Here was this whirling dervish of a hip hop community, amazing young men and women, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, all throwing these off-the-hook, outrageous moves to DJs spinning on the-mark, block-rocking soul beats. Fuck yeah!

This type of energy had been missing in my life for a while. The rock music scene had grown stale--too many managers, publicists, and restrictions, not to mention the unhealthy lifestyle I was trying to shake off. Been there--done that. The b-boy scene offered a freedom that was entirely refreshing. I realized just what I had to do. So off and on for the last six years I've been lugging bulky cameras and flashes to club nights and community centers and internationally attended multi-day battles. I knew I could sooner or later make a book--the subject so richly deserved it. I only had to do the work first.

My only regret is that I couldn't take more photographs and travel to more places. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of b-boys, b-girls, and their crews I wish were included. As it is I really only touch on the true global scope of breakdancing today. Someday the encyclopedia of b-boying will be made--this is not it. It is merely a slice, my brief yet passionate take. I did shoot several thousand images, of which nearly 500 reached my considered semi-finals. From that, only 85 made the final cut. Like a b-boy in a close-rocking cypher, I needed to keep the book tight, the footwork fast, the style clean, and the flow fresh. No wasted moves. That is the art of photography. That is the art of the cypher.
