The original edition of War Since 1945 was published in Britain in 1980 and in the USA in 1981. It described most of the wars which had taken place in the world since 1945 and this new edition brings the book up to date by the addition of a chapter covering the Falkland Islands campaign in 1982. These wars were very different in scale, length, and savagery. But in each one, the author traces the interaction of military and political events and shows how the military tide turned.
Field Marshal Lord Carver’s career in the British Army started in 1935 in the Royal Tank Corps and has taken him all over the world. In the Second World War, he commanded a tank battalion and an armored brigade while still in his twenties. After the war, he commanded an infantry brigade and a division, held many important posts on the staff, and became Commander-in-Chief Far East in 1967, Chief of the General Staff in 1971, and Chief of the Defense Staff between 1973 and 1976.
