Reseña del editor:
Not all mathematics discussions are alike. It's one thing to ask students to share how they solved a problem, to get ideas out on the table so that their thinking becomes visible; but knowing what to do with students' ideas where to go with them can be a daunting task. Intentional Talk provides teachers with a framework for planning and facilitating purposeful mathematics discussions that enrich and deepen student learning. According to Elham Kazemi and Allison Hintz, the critical first step is to identify a discussion's goal and then understand how to structure and facilitate the conversation to meet that goal. Through detailed vignettes from both primary and upper elementary classrooms, the authors provide a window into what teachers are thinking as they lead discussions and make important pedagogical and mathematical decisions along the way. Additionally, the authors examine students' roles as both listeners and talkers and, in the process, offer a number of strategies for improving student participation and learning. A collection of planning templates included in the appendix helps teachers apply the right structure to discussions in their own classrooms. Intentional Talk provides the perfect bridge between student engagement and conceptual understanding in mathematical discussions.
Biografía del autor:

Elham Kazemi is a professor and associate dean of professional learning at the University of Washington Seattle, where her focus is elementary mathematics education and school-based professional development. In 2012, Elham was nominated for the university's faculty award for Distinguished Contribution to Lifelong Learning. She is a frequent presenter at national conferences.

Elham received her master's and doctorate degrees in educational psychology (mathematics education) from the University of California, Los Angeles. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology, and her elementary teaching credentials, from Duke University.

"Children are brilliant," Elham says. "I love learning from children, and working with others who are fascinated by children's learning and development."

Her fascination with children's mathematical learning began during her graduate studies at UCLA, where her first research project involved observing twenty-four educators teach the same math lesson. "This experience was invaluable in helping me begin to think about what makes classroom learning environments productive," Elham says. "I also realized how important it is for teachers to have opportunities to learn from one another's practice."

As a result, Elham works side-by-side with teachers to build strong professional communities and "create thriving mathematical classrooms centered on children's thinking." She believes that strong university-school partnerships are instrumental in addressing social and academic inequities.

Intentional Talk: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions, cowritten with Allison Hintz, guides teachers through the process of goal setting, planning for, and facilitating meaningful and dynamic mathematical discussions in their classrooms. The book focuses on teacher and student roles in two types of discussions: open strategy sharing and targeted sharing. Vignettes from primary and upper elementary classrooms, paired with author commentary, provide an in-depth exploration of five types of targeted sharing. Planning templates for each discussion type empower teachers to apply the discussion structure to their own mathematics classrooms.

Born in Tehran, Elham immigrated to England when she was eight years old and settled in the United States when she was eleven. Her twin daughters are the source of many adventures. Together they enjoy soccer, volleyball, and football. Elham loves to knit, hike, and experiment with new foods.

Allison Hintz is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Washington Bothell. As an elementary teacher, Allison participated in the Developing Mathematical Ideas professional development with University of Washington professor Elham Kazemi, coauthor of Intentional Talk: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions. "As I sat with colleagues, drawing pictures and seeing concepts, a new passion was ignited," Allison says.

While continuing to teach, Allison earned her master's and doctorate degrees in curriculum and instruction/mathematics education from the University of Washington Seattle. Allison received a bachelor's degree in education from Washington State University.

"I am constantly amazed by children's thinking, and I deeply appreciate the opportunity to learn from students about what it means to think flexibly about number," Allison says. "I love helping all children and adults realize their mathematical 'smartnesses, ' and grow their love and wonder for mathematics."

Allison's areas of specialty include mathematical discussions, early numeracy, and school-based professional development. She believes in the importance of being "shoulder to shoulder" with teachers in their classrooms as a foundation for effective professional development.

Spending time with her two children is Allison's activity of choice. A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Allison also loves to cook and has a special fondness for "anything with lemons."
