Frank Thompson is a writer, filmmaker, film historian, and the author of over thirty books, including five nonfiction books on the Alamo, as well as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and . He is also the author of the novelization, The Alamo. He lives in North Hollywood, California.
John Lee Hancock is the director of The Alamo and The Rookie. From Booklist:
The movie The Alamo was a major spring 2004 release. This large-scale epic movie was the first on the subject since the 1959 film starring John Wayne. Film historian Thompson's large-format companion to the movie resembles Cold Mountain by Dan Auiler [BKL Mr 15 04] in terms of its organization. Thompson tracks the entire production of The Alamo, from the writing of the script to the designing and construction of the set to the filming itself. Intended to be "based on fact, not patriotic fancy," this movie's particular version of the mythical defeat of the Texan defenders of the mission-fort in San Antonio by the Mexican army during the Texas war for independence boasts major stars playing major historical figures. Profiles of these actors, including Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton, appear among extensive stills from the movie and behind-the-scenes shots; to set contexts, the author discusses the facts and myths behind the storming of the Alamo, as well as the Alamo's cinematic history. Finally, the film script itself is included. Brad Hooper
