West includes seven new individuals in this new edition of his collected interviews, which probes the experiences and opinions of publishers, authors, and anticensorship activists. Among the recent additions are author Katherine Paterson, who reflects on charges that some of her novels are "anti-Christian," bookstore owner Joyce Meskis, and librarian Elizabeth Briscoe-Wilson. West asks expected questions as well as a number of probing ones, which will be of great interest. However, there's no indication of when or even how--by mail, by phone, in person--the material was gathered, and with the exception of the addition of the dates of death of several of the original interviewees, little attempt has been made to update the retained headnotes. There's no mention, for example, that Robert Cormier has published several controversial books since his 1985 novel, Beyond the Chocolate War. Unfortunately, that weakens the impact of a book that otherwise does contain some intriguing perspectives. Stephanie ZvirinFrom Library Journal:
This straightforward look at censorship of children's literature should be required reading by any school board member, librarian, teacher, or publisher. West interviews such authors as Judy Blume, Norma Klein, Nat Hentoff, and Roald Dahl; their publishers, who speak up about the effect of censorship on handling the books of controversial authors and the selection of new materials to publish; and the leaders of the anticensorship movement, who discuss their fight to see that children have the right to read a variety of materials. This delightfully one-sided look at the current round of censorship provides insight and inspiration for the reader to continue the battle. Joanne Troutner, Tippecanoe Sch. Corp., Lafayette, Ind.
