The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal, 1941-1960 accompanies the first exhibition in English Canada ever devoted exclusively to the Automatistes' works. An insightful essay by distinguished professor Ray Ellenwood sets the group's extraordinary accomplishments in a variety of disciplines in the context of the social and political events of the time. And a lively text by eminent historian and curator Roald Nasgaard chronicles the emergence of the Automatiste form of painting, the experimentation of its practitioners and its legacy. Throughout, the authors quote not only the artists themselves but the many reviewers, critics, curators and art historians who have commented on the importance of their art.
Sumptuously illustrated with sixty full-colour paintings and twenty black-and-white archival images, this comprehensive introduction to the Automatistes and their work is a significant addition to any library. A fascinating mix of art, history and politics, The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal, 1941-1960 adds an important chapter to the history of Canadian art.

Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941 - 1960, 160 pages fully illustrated, HC DJ New copy. Pub 2009. The first exhibition in English Canada ever devoted exclusively to the Automatistes' works. Sumptuously illustrated with sixty full-colour paintings and twenty black-and-white archival images. The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal, 1941-1960 adds an important chapter to the history of Canadian art. Les Automatistes were a group of Québécois artistic dissidents from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The movement was founded in the early 1940s by painter Paul-Émile Borduas. Les Automatistes were so called because they were influenced by Surrealism and its theory of automatism. Members included Marcel Barbeau, Roger Fauteux, Claude Gauvreau, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Pierre Gauvreau, Fernand Leduc, Jean-Paul Mousseau, and Marcelle Ferron and Françoise Sullivan. Entirely dedicated to the Automatistes group, this large, lavish, hardcover catalog accompanied the recent traveling exhibition of selected works made between 1941 and 1960 by artists from the Automatiste group, which was presented at the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham, ON, in 2009.
