FIRST EDITION - (Please see the FOURTH edition)
This book is a comprehensive introduction to the 2017 French Presidential election. It provides the key strategic points of the election, while making them accessible and interesting for everybody from the non-specialist to the high-level expert.
Analysts and practitioners, citizens, students, and educators, will find in this book a quick and clear overview of the election.
This reference document has been written in strict adherence to the following principle: to be as objective and factual as possible.
It seeks to go further than the short-term information easily available in a majority of media reaction and comment, and to favour a framework for long-range analysis.
Some of the issues covered are:
> The candidates competing in the election,
> The key topics and strategies,
> The role of primaries in the French context of 2017,
> Voting intentions and perspectives, and why usual extrapolations are not appropriate,
> The French President’s role in the Fifth Republic,
> The way the President is elected,
> The legal framework for the election:
- the prerequisites for becoming a candidate,
- access of candidates to the media (equity and egality),
- the new rules regarding the financial aspects of the campaign (sums raised, expenses, reimbursement, current litigation).
A standalone timetable, with all key dates for the election, provides a global vision of the coming schedule. This updateable Excel file is a useful tool for analysis and planning.
After a quick reading of this short book, the reader will better understand election momentum and balance of power, and will be able to discuss these subjects with anyone who is interested, impacted, or involved in the 2017 French Presidential election.
Several editions are planned. They will be published on an as-needed basis, to continuously provide the reader with up-to-date analysis. The content of each edition will also evolve according to feedback received from readers (dedicated email adress).
