Volume 14 of 22 in the Aesthetical Works of St. Alphonsus de Ligouri, first published in 1760. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, scholastic philosopher and theologian, and founder of the Redemptorists, an influential religious congregation. He was canonized in 1839 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1871 This fourteenth volume of his "Aesthetical Works" treats the Divine Office, also known as the Liturgy of the Hours. Written for priests and religious, who are obliged to say the office, Liguori treats every psalm in a footnote and explanatory manner. The text contains Translation comparisons from the different ancients, examinations of the contemporary terms used (the “Hebraisms” found in Hebrew), and points for reflection. Reproduced from older English editions, this non-facsimile 2015 edition has been meticulously restored and faithfully edited (with 436 footnotes) to provide a clean and trim appearance that distinguishes the psalm's Latin and English version with its attached commentary.
