In 2013, a decrepit, abandoned former watchcase factory in a small, seaside town is undergoing an extreme renovation, to be re-imagined as a luxury apartment building. Ben, an out-of-work local, is only too happy to be hired for the partial demolition, never imagining how much of the past the building still holds. In 1896, a young woman named Jenny toils in a watchcase factory to help support her family, never imagining she might find love—and face horrific danger—as she navigates her grueling daily life. Poignant and chilling, “Watchwork” is the story of two eras, and two tales, that intersect across time.
Erica-Lynn Huberty’s collection Dog Boy and Other Harrowing Tales was short-listed for both the Eric Hoffer Prize for Short Fiction, and the Benjamin Franklin Award for fiction. A former senior arts writer and art critic for The Southampton Press, she was also an art critic for Sculpture Magazine and a writer for The New York Times. Her short stories, poems, and essays have been published in many magazines and newspapers including Camillia Journal and The Washington Post.
