9781493501700: Grotius' Universe: Divine Law and a Quest for Harmony

In an era of international tensions and chaotic personal relations, it is salutary to be introduced to or reacquainted with the work of Dutch jurist and theologian Hugo Grotius, who flourished in the first half of the similarly chaotic seventeenth century. Grotius’ work stresses the nature of man as well as the relationship of man to his fellow man, of nations to the universe, and of all to the Creator. To understand the relationship between the macrocosm and microcosm, man must use reason to define his actions, study history to discern creative patterns, and cultivate faith to experience harmony and engage in positive action. “This whole universe makes but one world,” Grotius wrote, “in which there is but one thing that exceeds the rest in beauty, that is, the sun; and in every man there is but one thing that governs, that is, the mind.”

From the Author:

A brief biography of Hugo Grotius is now added to the book's second edition. In addition, the book includes several images of Grotius and a number of the various covers of his now famous texts and publications; also an updated bibliography of selected books and articles is  part of the second edition. It is hoped that the second edition of GROTIUS UNIVERSE reaches those scholars and statesmen who believe that The League of Nations Covenant, The United Nations Charter and the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights are of permanent value for creating Peace and Harmony for our planet Earth not only in this decade but in many more decades to come.

About the Author:

William V. Sotirovich studied history, politics, and philosophy at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University, and obtained his bachelor’s degree from Dorchester College. Mr. Sotirovich is currently organizing a committee entitled “The U.S.A. Space Program and Return to the Moon.”
