Christmastime, 2014. With a sudden, nuclear-like flash of light, the population of the planet is decimated. Every living human, save one Amelia McDougal, an eight year-old girl in the Los Angeles bedroom community of Marysville, California, three other children--and one adult--have perished. The mysterious man's mission is to find them, and he is a terrifying figure in his hunt. Devil-may-care Munster Gardella, the second of the four children, falls into his hands, and for the second time, Amelia's life collapses, until she meets two children of color hiding in a church the rainy night when Munster vanishes. Lashawna and Jerrick Freeman, bookish, and as devastated as Amelia by the loss of their family, pit themselves against the evil adult, but their first priority is to stay alive, and stay out of sight of the apparent cause of the world-wide disaster. Strange, dark, swirling creatures without features are scouring the land, picking off any survivors they find. And it seems the lone adult survivor is in league with them. Amelia must draw up every ounce of courage, use her wits, and pray to her favorite saint, if any of her new friends expect to survive.
