Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858-1932) was an African-American novelist, short-story writer, political activist, and essayist. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Chesnutt is famous for his novels and short stories, in which he explores the problems of social and ethnic identity created in the United States by slavery.
