9781441936332: Handbook of Diabetes Management

The growing problem of diabetes presents difficult challenges for sufferers and for those in the healthcare professions, who are in the unenviable position of trying to convince patients to change their lifestyle "for their own good." Handbook of Diabetes Management provides practical knowledge and advice that can help you anticipate the challenges of working with these Patients. What's more, since the knowledge here is evidence-based, you can assure your patients that the guidelines you're presenting to them have been shown to be effective.

This guide takes into account the complexity of the disease, the diversity of the populations it affects, and the continued improvement of care systems. It discusses the origins of diabetes and medication management and treatment, then presents advice based on the latest research findings on:

-behavioral health and self-management issues and interventions

-tips for patients dealing with issues such as travel, surgery, and foot care

-treating specific patient populations including Latinos, Native Americans, rural communities, and the uninsured

-case studies from successful, replicable programs

Also addressing the business aspects of diabetes care related to such areas as legal and regulatory issues and health policy initiatives, Handbook of Diabetes Management, brings you practical insights based on the latest research.

"This handbook book by expert professionals covers every aspect of diabetic care. It is a sound, evidence-based, culturally informative, practical approach to diabetes prevention and disease management."

-Kathleen Lambert, BSN, RN, JD, from the Foreword

From the Back Cover:

Over 18 million Americans are afflicted. Nearly as many are at risk. Diabetic conditions account for one-fifth of the nation’s chronic health care burden.

A public health crisis of this magnitude demands professional resources that apply evidence-based practical knowledge and anticipate the challenges that lie ahead. The Handbook of Diabetes Management is one such reference, addressing the complexity of the disease, the diversity of the populations it affects, and the continued improvement of care systems.

- The latest findings on management and treatment - medication, nutrition, exercise, alternative therapies - plus patient self-care and behavioral issues

- An accessible overview of diabetic origins and disease processes

- Up-close coverage of specific patient populations, including Latinos, Native Americans, rural communities, and the uninsured

- In-depth discussion of prediabetes, gestational diabetes, and foot conditions

- An assortment of invaluable tools, from depression assessment instruments to critical reviews of popular diets

- Salient chapters on policy, regulatory, funding, marketing, and media issues

- Innovative case studies from successful, replicable programs

The Handbook’s message is clear: effective diabetes management means support at the individual, provider, and system levels. This forward-looking volume sets standards for proactive care, whether readers are involved in hands-on practice, patient education, or the regional office.

About the Author:

Donna Zazworsky, MS, RN, CCM, FAAN, is an internationally known expert in case management and disease management with community populations. She is managing partner for Case Manager Solutions, LLC, and director of Grants, Partnerships and Policy for St. Elizabeth of Hungary Community Health Center---a large clinic that serves more than 18,000 uninsured in Tucson and the surrounding communities. On a personal note, Donna’s mother and two maternal aunts have experienced the devastating complications of Type 2 Diabetes. Six years ago, her mother suffered a stroke that has left her with left sided weakness. Both aunts died of diabetes complications related to above the knee bilateral amputations and end stage renal disease. Not only is diabetes prevention a personal motivation for Donna, but case management and disease management systems provide a primary focus for her work in understanding and reducing barriers for people with diabetes.

Jane Nelson Bolin, RN, JD, PhD, is a professor and researcher in rural health and disease management at Texas A&M. On a personal note, Jane has had gestational diabetes during both of her pregnancies. Knowing that the incidence of getting Type 2 diabetes at a later age is more than 70%, Jane practices a personal prevention program that includes diet and exercise.

Vicki Gaubeca, MPH, is assistant director of Public Affairs and Community Outreach for the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health. On a personal note, Vicki has had Type 1 Diabetes since she was a teenager. She knows the day-to-day struggles of self management and hopes that this handbook will lend insight to the public health workers who help people with diabetes.
