New Exposition Of The Science Of Knowledge is a philosophical work by Johann Gottlieb Fichte, originally published in 1869. The book is an exposition of Fichte's philosophical system, which he developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Fichte's system is known as transcendental idealism, which posits that the mind is the source of all knowledge and that the world as we experience it is a product of the mind's activity. In this work, Fichte presents his system in a new and updated form, addressing some of the criticisms that had been leveled against it in the intervening years. He begins by discussing the nature of consciousness and the role it plays in the acquisition of knowledge. He then goes on to explore the relationship between the subject and the object of knowledge, arguing that the two are intimately connected and that the subject must actively create the object of knowledge in order to know it.Throughout the book, Fichte engages with a range of philosophical topics, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and politics. He also draws on insights from other thinkers, such as Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Schelling, to develop his own ideas. Overall, New Exposition Of The Science Of Knowledge is a complex and challenging work that offers a detailed and systematic account of Fichte's philosophical system. It remains an important text in the history of philosophy and continues to be studied and debated by scholars today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Preface. previously translated for the Journal of Speculative Philosophy, wherein this work was first published, Fichte sF irst andS econd Intro ductions to hisS cience, as well as hisS un-clear Statement respecting thatS cience, three works which connect with the present exposition in a particularly happy manner. As for the translation itself, it is an old work indeed, my oldest attempt at a translation ofF ichte sS cience. It was begun at New York in 1860 and finished atS t. Louis in 1861. Nevertheless, I be lieve I may conscientiously sa3r, that it is a very accurate translation ;therein differing materially from my translation of the first representation of theS cience of Knowledge. For whereas in the present work only the divisions and headings are my own, in that other translation I both omitted and added to a large extent. I omitted all those sentences and paragraphs which 1considered out of place in a book-presentation though probably very much in place in a lecturepresentation of theS cience of Knowledge ;and I added, for instance, the whole of the second portion of the theoretical part, which in the German edition is published as a separate work, but which really belongs where 1have placed it additions and omissions which, in my judgment, make my English version of theS cience of Knowledge of 1794 much superior to the German original. The few students whom this work may interest I would beg not to be discouraged by any possible failure to comprehend it at its first, second, or even third reading. To a mind educated in the method of our modern schools and colleges, nothing is so difficult as to find sense inT ranscendental Philosophy; just as to a transcendental philosopher the most commonly accepted rules, doctrines, axioms, c., appear utterly absurd and beyond comprehension. The Science of Knowledge is not a book to read, but a work to study as yo
