In his best-selling book Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) he idealised the American frontier, and many of his novels and stories have been adapted for film and television. In addition to the title story, this collection published in 1923 includes The Great Slave, Yaqui, Tigre, and The Rubber Hunter. With illustrations, reproduced in black and white, by Charles S. Chapman and Frank Street.
