9781405265041: A Very Pirate Christmas

A rollicking, laugh-out-loud festive story that combines robots, pirates, and Christmas into one fun tale

A crew of scurvy pirates were lurking in the dark, savage as the stormy sea and greedy as a shark. They climbed aboard that flying sleigh and did a dreadful thing. . . They tied poor Father Christmas up with gift wrap and with string!

This delightful, twisted Christmas tale sees Father Christmas being captured by scurrilous robot pirates. The pirates then set about stealing the sleigh, pilfering the presents, and generally ruining the holiday. What sort of Christmas morning is in store? Can anyone thwart the pirate Santa and rescue the real Father Christmas? Timothy Knapman’s funny, rhyming text is paired brilliantly with Russell Ayto’s distinctive, atmospheric artwork.

About the Author:

Timothy Knapman is a children's author and playwright, and the author of The Dinosaurs in the Supermarket and Eleanor’s Eyebrows. Russell Ayto is an illustrator whose works include the Captain Flinn and the Dinosaur Pirates series, The Cow that Laid an Egg, and The Witch's Children.

From School Library Journal:

PreS-Gr 1—Santa has barely started his annual Christmas sleigh ride when he is hijacked by a pirate captain and his mangy robotic crew. The captain ties Santa up and dons his red suit and all the pirates take to the skies in Santa's sleigh. After a precarious, turbulent flight, they find a house, steal all the Christmas paraphernalia (from tree to presents), and bring it back to their ship, where they feast on fruitcakes and gloat evilly. Luckily, they are foiled by tiny cabin boy Pip (in striped nightcap and eye patch), who makes them give Christmas back. In thanks, Santa makes Pip the captain and demotes the captain to toilet-scrubbing cabin boy. The rhyming text is humorous and keeps the energy level high, but the real charm lies in the goofy illustrations of the robot pirates with their toothy grins and mismatched limbs, the rotund Santa, and the skinny-legged reindeer. VERDICT A hilariously offbeat Christmas tale à la The Nightmare Before Christmas.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
