Tim-ace to Macedonia. (see the note on A671 xvi. 11, 12. It was called from s/zp of Medan, the father of fl/exaaa'er the Great, who enlarged and fortified it, and gave it that name. And it was famous for the battles that were afterward fought in its neighbouring fields, between Augq/z'ur and [work on one fide, and Brutur and on the other, in which the former were victorious.

Accordingly he begins his Epif'tle with hearty thank vings to God for the eminent grace beflowed upon them, and: heir af~ feétionate regards to himfelf; expreifes his ardent love to them, and great fatisfaélion in them; and alfures them. That his bonds were over-ruled for the furtheranceof the gofpel; that he was calm and comfortable under them, and was confident, that 'in a little time he fhould be releafed from them, as it proved in the event; and fo en courages them to be eafy:as to him, and to beat up with Chrifiian fortitude under the fufferings which they themfelves endured for the fake of Chrifl: and the gofpel, chap..i. He exhorts them to love and union, public-fpiritednefs and lowlinefs of mind, which he recom mends to them, by the matchlefs and furprifing example of Chrift's humbling himfelf; and hopes to fend Timothy, and to come after wards himfelf to help them {till further in their fpiritual affairs, c/jap. Ii. Encourages their holy joy in Chrift; cautions them a gainfl; the attempts of jua'aiaerr, with whom he and {hews the happy change that was made u grace, and the principles and views, with tion to theirs and which he propofes to the imitation of the Phi lzjbpiam, chap. Iii. And clofes the Epiftle with expreflions of great tendernefs toward them, and toward fome particular perfons among them, with exhortations to feveral religious and moral duties, with repeated grateful acknowledgments of their favours to him.
