HE Third Edition of this work does not call for a lengthy introduction, but it is necessary to Specify a few of the most important additions and modifications which have been necessitated by the lapse of time and the developments of modern music.

In the first place, the Author has had the melancholy duty of recording the death of a large number of musicians in every part of the world, many of whose names will be honoured through succeeding generations. It has also been necessary in some cases to revise dates of birth and the production of important musical works.

The list of Musical Terms has been extended, and the Supplementary List formerly given at the end of the book has been incorporated in the body of the Dictionary. Several cross-references have been added, and numerous small errors of typing corrected.

The Musical Bibliography has been considerably extended by the inclusion of important recent books on musical subjects, and the Whole work has been carefully revised and, Wherever possible, brought up to date. Perhaps the most important addition to the volume is the inclusion of 200 names of Composers, Instrumentalists, Singers, and Writers on Music who have secured a position in the musical world Since the issue of the previous editions.
