In regard to the nomenclature the arrangement has been made under, as far as possible, the commonly used Latin name, but owing to the number of synonyms it has been found necessary to arrange an index.

The Imperial System of weights and measures has been adhered to, since it is the system still in general use by medical men and pharmacists. As the British and other Pharmacopoeias now express all formulas in parts per thousand, it is hoped that this book will save the time and trouble involved in making the necessary calculations when a few ounces of any preparation are required.

The rule of solids by Weight, liquids by measure should be followed with the British and American formulas unless otherwise stated; but both solids and liquids should be weighed when making up formulas from Continental sources.
