Abbess, the superior of an abbey or con vent of nuns. The abbess has the same rights and authority over her nuns that the abbots regular have over their monks. The sex, indeed, does not allow her to perform the spiritual functions annexed to the priesthood, wherewith the abbot is usually invested; but there are instances of some abbesses who have a right, or rather a pri vilege, to commission a priest to act for them. They have even a kind of episcopal jurisdiction, as well as some abbots who are exempted from the visitation Of their diocesan.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive dictionary of religious and ecclesiastical terms, probing into the history of the church since the sacred canon was concluded. It explains the numerous terms and sects that have subsisted since that time. The author does not depreciate the valuable works that have come before it, acknowledging their excellencies, but this work is of a different nature, encompassing not only scripture terms but also ecclesiastical history, the passions of the human mind, and theological systems. An honest attempt has been made to communicate what is believed to be the truth, avoiding fanatical extremes and walking in the path of candor. The author has endeavored to carry the torch of truth without forgetting to walk in the path of candor. While intended to serve no party or encourage bigotry, the insights provided by this dictionary will be of use to inform the mind and impress the heart, thus promoting the real good of the reader.
