Having congratulated with you, Sir, six years ago, on the rare example your conduct then displayed in sacrificing dignity and emolument to principle, it affords me inexpressible pleasure to be able to repeat those congratulations at the present time, when Europe beholds you, in conjunction with other illustrious characters who form the best hopes of the country, acting the same honourable and conscientious part. That narrow-minded men should injure their own cause, and that ambitious men should grasp at every means of preferment is not surprising; but it would have been a truly strange and singular instance in the life of Mr. Windham, if for the sake of present favour, or any personal interest under heaven, he had entered into engagements, which might eventually prove incompatible with the permanent advantage of his Sovereign and the salvation or the prosperity of the British Empire.
