Preamble.

Half a mile beyond the vale,
Where the highway climbs the slope,
White with orchard bloom in May,
Near the weather-beaten church,
With the shadow of its spire
Stealing o'er the grassy graves,
Looks the mansion through the trees
Still across the vacant street.
Heavy is the perfume there
Of the lilacs every spring,
And beside the silent path
Blossoms yet the guelder-rose.
Ancient is the lonely Manse,
With its faded yellow walls,
And its roof with moss is green,
And the sombre window-panes,
Where the daylight steals within,
