Excerpt from Progress: And Other Sketches
But these are rare. So, casting back again to writing of the exterior life, I say that it is easy - that is, of course, if the man writing has no humour, the lack of which no wit supplies; for wit is but a varnish on the mind, a brightness and an exterior polish, bringing out, no doubt, the colour; but humour is the recompense which man made for himself after the fall and when first sorrow came into the world.
SO he who writes the preface to his book describes his own interior life, or, without wishing, lets it peep out from the depths Of his own being, without the shield of faith which the illuminati hold upon their arms, protected only by his humour from the world.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the disregarded and poignant tale of Tomochic, a remote Mexican village whose inhabitants found themselves locked in a desperate struggle against the forces of progress and modernization, led by the iron-fisted President Porfirio Diaz. The author paints a vivid picture of the events leading up to the conflict, exploring the rise of religious fanaticism and the clash between traditional values and the inexorable march of modernity. Through the personal experiences of a young army officer, the book delves into the human cost of a conflict that pitted brother against brother, leaving an enduring mark on the history of Mexico and its people. The author's skillful storytelling and empathetic portrayal of the villagers' plight provide a deeply moving and thought-provoking examination of the human condition, offering insights into the complexities of faith, sacrifice, and the enduring power of community in the face of adversity.
