IN the advertisement to the collected edition of the Waverley Novels, (page iii.) Sir Walter Scott states that he proposes to publish, on this occasion, the va rions legends, family traditions, or obscure historical facts which have formed the groundwork of these novels; and in the general preface (page xxxviii.) he adds, I have done all that I can do to explain'the nature of my materials and the use I have made of them.
It is the purpose of the following pages to show that this eminent author failed to fulfil the voluntary promise of the advertisement, and that the assertion quoted in the general preface is incorrect.
